Wrap Nation Finishes a Vehicle Wrap at NBM Long Beach 2018
In this article I’m not going to cover installing a vehicle wrap. That you can learn from others. What I am going to write about is getting started in vehicle wrap design. I want to answer the following questions:
When a customer wants a vehicle wrapped, no doubt they have some sort of idea of what the want for the outcome. But to be sure, meet with the customer and ask as many questions as you can about the design, the car and even the purpose of the design.
They may bring artwork to you. Right…. from Word!!! Make sure your software can open the images. You’ll also need to examine each image for size and resolution. Put a folder on the desktop and start saving information like the customer details, conversation notes, drawing and images.
Ask the customer for pictures of the vehicle or even better have them drive it to this meeting and YOU take those pictures, the more the better! Every angle. Look for irregularities, added or customer hardware etc. Basically do a vehicle inspection of the entire body of the car.
Finally, after you have this information, form a plan for the design. Ask yourself, what do you lack? What do you need to get started in the design? Who will be doing the install? How fast does this REALLY need to be done? What printer is being used to print the design? What media does the installer use? How difficult is the design the customer wants going to be?
To keep track of all this preparation, it would be good to develop a vehicle wrap checklist. If the customer has not brought you ideas, how do you get your inspiration? I suggest spending quality time on your computer with your friend and mine, Pinterest! You thought I was going to say Google didn’t you. Well, both might work, but Pinterest seems to be an easier way to “see” stuff. Don’t look at just the “wild and crazy guy” designs, but also look for the more subtle designs. After a while you’ll develop your own style. Keep in mind that the time spent on the design is related to how hard it will be to install the design and that’s all funded by your customer. So you might want to find 3-5 design ideas that might work and then rank from easy to difficult which translates to low price to high price.
Let’s hope by now you’ve got some good photos of the customers vehicle. Let’s also assume you have an idea in your head about what you are going to do for a design. Here are some suggestions for mocking up the design on your computer so you can have a sit down with a customer. Just always keep in ind that vehicle wraps are a balancing act. You need to balance, design with installation, the vehicle itself, price and timing.
Photoshop is a great program for mock ups because you can use the actual photo of the car or truck to show off your design. Remember, we are just at the mock-up stage, so keep in mind that after something looks pretty good to you, you’ll still need to make certain that it can actually be done. (This is where the installer can assist.)
If you’re going to use Adobe, there are lots of YouTube videos that can walk you through the entire process. Here are some of my favorites:
So I love that fact that you can show off an actual picture of the vehicle with a design. What I don’t like is the learning curve here. Keep in mind you’re going to have to spend time learning this process. I can’t say how long because every person is different. Also keep in mind that you’ll also need to print the wrap.
One of the things to be careful about is the output may not match the colors you see on the monitor. We’ll discuss that later, but what I’m trying to say is don’t go over board here! Remember, it has to be printed and installed! That means you’re going to need a RIP software to run that wide format printer. ONYX, VersaWorks and FlexiSIGN & Print come to mind. My favorite is Flexi. Here’s why.

While Flexi does not have all the bells and whistles of Adobe products, it was created not only for design but for output, so it has many features that you may need for the little things a wrap deserves, like making decals or print & cut components. UV-LED printers are wide format printers that use UV curable inks that can print on many, many surfaces. For that reason, they are quickly becoming the printer of choice for sign shops, specialty graphics shops and print providers worldwide. UV inks allow fre a great diversity of printing media and thus can be sued to create an almost infinite number of applications.
Maybe items like smartphone cases, or pens or luggage tags come to mind what you think of UV-LED printers, but I’m here to tell you there is more. much more!

From wine labels to 4 x 8 ft signage, UV inks are making a splash these days.

There is almost no area that dye sublimation doesn’t have some application for, and one of my favorites is all over tee shirt printing.
Nothing makes all over printing easier than tacky paper.
I get my paper and tacky paper from Beaver Paper http://beaverpaper.com/, Rob Rapasi and the gang over there keep me in the papers I needed and provide me with textile for direct print as well.
So tacky paper is just that, it has, typically a heat activated adhesive, that makes the paper ‘stick’ to the fabric during sublimation.
This works well for doing all over work on pre-sewn garments because if you use non sticky paper, when you do the second side pressing the first side will visually lighten up.
With tacky paper the paper remains on the first side so that that side does not lighten up when pressing the second side.
So I lay out both sides so that I can fold the paper into a ‘sandwich’ to put the shirt in.

You can line up both images if your paper is translucent enough
I like to press my shirts for about 5 seconds to flatten them out.
Roll the top layer up, place the shirt, roll the top layer down over the shirt.
Press side one, flip, press side two.
Peel shirt from tacky paper, enjoy your new all-over shirt.
Tacky paper works well for all-over garments, but does fantastic with piece parts as well, that will be sewn into garments.

MUTOH AMERICA had a great show at the recent NBM trade show in Long beach, CA. The booth was packed with people for all three days and they did a great job teaching the crowd tips and tricks in vehicle wrapping. The wrap was done by Wrap Nation. All printing was done on the MUTOH ValueJet 1638x wide format printer, the “wrapper choice” as its come to be know in the industry.

Wide Format Printing? Think in Terms of Dog YearsYou’ve heard it I’m sure “Every year of a dogs life is like seven humans years.” That’s kind of how it feels to me when it comes to how fast technology is evolving in the wide format print business. Seems like every year that goes by there are leaps in technology.
But what do we mean by technology? The wide format printing industry is very broad and includes wide format printers, inks, media, finishing equipment and much more.
Seems like you buy a component and in the next year or two you are already behind in technology. But is that something to be concerned with? Not usually. I think most equipment is fine for a good 5 years. Remember, that’s like keeping it for 35 dog years! After that, yes it’s time to look for an upgrade.
Now some of you I have become acquainted with over the years, take great pride in keeping equipment and software as long as possible. I know a few of you that still love to run Windows XP or Vista and older software for instance. Well, okay, I certainly won’t stop you and you have the right to exercise your freedom of choice.
Me? I’m a technology freak. Over the decades of service to the sign & print market, I’ve seen how new technology helps shops to get faster and more efficient and most importantly to grow. However, as that technology is needed, your computer and Windows operating system must keep up.
If you are like me, you hate paying that insurance bill. Seems like you pay and pay and rarely if ever use it. The exception might be life insurance, since at some point we will all use that one. But we get insurance on our house, our car,and our health. That said, we simply know month to month that we need to budget some of our money for that cost.
If you are going to be keeping up with technology, it’s going to take some planning and it might feel a bit like insurance, but you’ll need to save a little of your profits each month to apply to upgrades when you need them. Like I said previously, that might not be for 3 years or so, and that can give you a great budget when you need to use it. Put away just $100 and month and you’d have $3600 for upgrades, $200 and you’d have $7600 in just 3 years!
Another way to budget monthly is to use subscriptions. I now it may feel like you don’t own a software using this method, but many times when a software company offers a subscription form of payment, they include all upgrades for free or at a very discounted rate.
One example of this system is FlexiSIGN & Print from SA International, www.thinksai.com. They offer the option of “buying” their software in two forms. You can purchase the software and then pay for upgrades. Buying it would cost yu between $3000-$4000, and upgrades can be $200-$700 or more depending on how long you wait. Hoever, if you subscribe to the software, you can get the highest level of it for about $50/mo. if paid yearly and they will give you the updates for “free”. The subscription is not such a big blow to your budget and of course can fee up money for other technology.
Adobe products also offer the subscription model, but there is no option, you MUST get it on the subscription bases.
As far as equipment, wide format printers, laminators, heat presses, etc. probably the wide format printer is the most rapidly changing piece. Today there are printers with Eco-Solvent inks, Latex, UV, and Dye-Sublimation as well as water based for direct to textile printing. The fastest growing market is in dye-sublimation and UV printing. Print equipment is getting both smaller and larger. In other words, you can get smaller format printers for the craft and specialty markets and larger for the more industrial applications.
First to the market, first generation printers typically have a premium price, because they satisfy a market demand. Second and third generation printers typically will have competitors and while they may be better than the first generation, they may also be less expensive in order to compete.
For instance, MUTOH is going to release its new PJ2508UF PerformanceJet 4×8 ft. UV-LED in September of 2018. One of the advantages to you is that others have already released similar technology but MUTOH has studied the issues from other machines as well as the market demands and therefore it’s release will have many improvements and advantages over competition at a cost savings to the buyer. Basically you get more for the money!
The MUTOH RJ900x has been wildly popular due to the low price for such a high quality dye-sublimation printer. Wrap installers from fifty-three countries across the globe can submit commercial, full print or color change wrap projects to be judged to win thousands in prizes. Good question. Look around you. Most of what you see has used the dye sublimation process if it’s printed. Coffee mugs, hats, socks, sport shirts, flags, even furniture and other textiles.
Dye sublimation requires a printed image to be transferred to the object using heat. An image may be printed on transfer paper that is held against , say a coffee mug by a heat press at high temperature for a little less than a minute. The ink on the transfer paper is transformed into a gas that then combines with the object and is very permanent in nature when finished. The object of course must be able to accept the gaseous ink. For textiles, that means it must be a polyester. Since the temperatures for the transfer can reach 300-400 degrees F, the object must also have the property of not “burning” or discoloring at that high temperature.
There is an alternate method for dye sublimation printing where the ink is applied directly to a substrate that has been coated. Ink bonding is achieved by exposing the fabric to heat. This is typically used when the substrate is very wide and perhaps long, such as with sheets or bed cover, curtains etc.
The dye sublimation process allows you to print to a variety of objects. That being the case, start looking around you and making a list of things you might want to sell.
Now here is where you need to do some research. Don’t get pulled into something that won’t allow you to grow. Some printers may be inexpensive, but once you become a bit known, you are going to be asked to do more, wider, longer.
If you get a sublimation printer that can only use 8×10 or 11×17 sheets of transfer paper, you are limited to those sizes. Consider spending a bit more and getting a printer that might allow you to go 24 inches and longer lengths or if you really want to jump in, even wider printers such as a 54 inch wide format printer.
Hey, here at MUTOH we want you to get the right start, so consider talking it over with one of our experts who can give you some good advise. Yep, we’ll even tell you if the smaller 8×10 printer is the right choice for you. Later, we know you’ll thank us by getting one of our wide format printers if you grow.
As an example, the typical smaller budget printer, like the Epson model shown above accepts A3 (11.69 x 16.54 in)/A4 (8.27 x 11.69 in) transfer paper. Good for a lot of stuff, but limiting regarding length and width for that matter.
A better choice might be the MUTOH ValueJet RJ900X if you have a tighter budget or a 1624WX that will give you
real printing power. These are real business printers not just hobby printers. As I mentioned earlier, once you get a bit known, you are going to be happy you didn’t have to turn down work just because your printer wasn’t wide enough or versatile enough to accommodate the job or the number of items you needed to make.
Of course designing your images for printing can be done in many ways. You can just go right from digital camera to print and some printers do come with the needed software to make the printer run. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (June 25, 2018) – Mac Papers, one of the largest merchant distributors in the Southeast U.S., announced today the June 27 grand opening of its newest wide format demo center. Located at the Mac Papers Nashville branch, the center showcases the latest wide format printing and finishing technologies from best-in-class equipment manufacturers including Roland DGA, Mutoh America Inc., Canon Solutions America, Geo Knight & Co, and Printware.
“We’re extremely pleased to offer our customers a fourth location in the Southeast where they can get hands-on wide format equipment and media experience and training,” said Marty Davis, director of wide format and graphics for Mac Papers. “The grand opening of our Nashville demo center will feature demonstrations of the latest equipment as well as complimentary seminars, including two excellent sessions from wide format sign and graphics expert Mark Rugen of Mutoh.”
Davis will lead a lunch seminar on dye sublimation techniques and trends, and members of the Mac Papers wide format technical team will be present to demonstrate equipment and recommend media from top manufacturers including Neenah Coldenhove, General Formulations and Avery Dennison.
